Reader Comments on 'Exploring Eastern Bohol'

For a long time, we wanted to explore the eastern part of Bohol. While flying over Bohol, I had seen apparently marvelous white beaches and an interesting landscape, and the stories we have been told by people who had been there were promising: ‘Better than Alona Beach.’ So we decided to go there....

I have made up my mind to go to Bohol on 27-30SEP. I am a beach lover and Boracay has been a big disappointment. I am hoping that Anda would renew my spirit and so am not looking for posh accomodation. I am travelling alone and would appreciate security with the serenity of my surroundings. I have been to the Bituon Resort site but it is in German! Anything for an english-speaking overseas-based, beach-starved Pilipina?

Hats off to the editor for the articles on this site. Thoughtful and thorough.

The secret to helping Bohol keep its charm while the livelihood of its people is improved does require attracting business, but the greater task will be in educating local government and businesses to create long-term plans that create the future its citizens wish to inhabit. Zoning and pricing access in a way that gives local entrepreneurs an incentive to preserve the natural beauty of Bohol, East-and-West.

One of the miracles of southern Africa - to name an extreme case - is that of Botswana, squeezed between Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe - all troubled countries. Nonetheless, successive governments have heavily promoted (through selective channels) but rationed access to its natural wonders. The result is a country with high-margin, moderate-volume tourism that has replaced diamonds as the new source of sustainable prosperity.

One can not rely upon the luck of finding another 100 Herr Hohmanns, who have a transcendant vision. One must create that vision in Bohol and recruit like-minded partners from home and abroad.

For example, my company would be proud to improve the micro-finance and small-business-finance sector there, to help local entrepreneurs build responsibly, as a local partner and new resident.

More power to you!

Thanks for your comment. Yes, we want to see tourism developed in Bohol in such a way that local entrepeneurs can develop a viable and sustainable source of income from it, without the environmental destruction and social disruption that uncontrolled mass-tourism can bring. It is for this reason that we try to show the beauty of this island to all, including our many local visitors, such that they can appreciate it and start caring for it, and at the same time oppose mega-projects that are beyond the current capacity of the island to take up.--Jeroen.

Nice little comments, but the surest way to destroy the preternatural beauty of an area is to publicize it. I suggest letting others find out about these area all by themselves and on their own--otherwise the foreigners will probably try to lease up the lands and then there goes the neighborhood and here comes the pollution.

There are even faster ways to destroy natural beauty: lack of interest, indifference, and lack of means to something about it. This website tries what it can to awaken interest in what we have, encourage a responsible way of dealing with it, stir up some pride, and tries to bring some development of the place. BTW, the email address you use translates to Uncle Greedy, which is not a flattering nickname in the Philippines, I hope you are aware of that.--Jeroen.

In my entire life I have never read any articles that pick Eastern Bohol as the focus of interest, until I came across with this site and happened to browse this page. I must say that tackling such topics as Exploring Eastern Bohol is a promising catalyst that will trigger the interest of the readers and travellers alike to experience the unique beauty and quietude these not-yet-well-known tourist destinations in the eastern part can offer. This article promotes this part of the province in a significantly higher level and with a greater impact provided that it is published or posted on the internet. This also gives opportunity to make the other side of the province be known to many with its uniquely secluded and serene beauty. These areas are not yet well-developed and some are not even developed and privatized, thus some people's intention of going there to connect with nature and find inner peace will surely be attained. Since most of the beaches remain unscathed, that is, no cottages yet, it is my hope that curious tourists will not expect too much as to the accomodation and food. There is only one thing that I fear, though, upon posting this article on the internet. I would rather prefer these beaches to remain as is despite the surging number of tourists visiting so as to preserve the essence of these pieces of nature to our lives: give us a place in this chaotic world to ponder and contemplate with nature. I fear the reality that privatizing these beaches would somewhat deteriorate this important role of nature to us. To the webmaster who is good enough to touch this topic, more power to you, sir!

My best experience in Bohol was the Boholanons sense of pride of their island. I have never met such beautiful, hospitable, and intellegent souls and minds wrap into one island in my life in the five continents of the world that I've been to. The only group of people that come close the Boholanons in these terms, I guess, are the Ivatans of Batanes Island, northern Philippines. I love both islands and the people so much that I could very well consider life after 50s in either, or perhaps both islands, someday.

Dear Jeroen, I found your article about Eastern Bohol and got some new information. About the resort you stayed, Bituon Beach, you did not mention, may be not know, that they are closed to bypassers, that is if you did not book a package in Germany you are not welcome. Probably they made an exception to you. It lookslike you did not find our resort, Flower-Beach, in Barangay Virgen, Anda, about 5 km from Bituon, opened about 2 years ago on a beautiful quiet white beach, offering high standard rooms, restaurant and now also a fully equipped dive center. Best regards, Werner

Thanks for the information on your resort. Yes, I am aware that Bituon normally only accepts visitors on pre-booked arrangements, and made an exception for us staying for a couple of days. Also, as I mention, they are strongly oriented to German speaking guests. At that time, there were only two facilities near Anda. Now there are more, and if we find time, we may come again, and also visit some other resorts.--Jeroen.

Hi Jeroen, We found your article on Anda very interesting as we have been thinking of setting up a small resort similar to the German resort there. We visited last year and will be there again in May. We want to find a reasonably priced block to start a scuba resort for Australians and others. Could you tell us more about the government blocks you mentioned? We heard that a small resort there that was not complete just sold. My wife is originally from Guindulman. If anyone knows of any likely properties they could contact us it would be appreciated. We will see you all in Bohol in May

You know my friends, there are lots of good beaches in the east of bohol, not only duero, candijay, anda etc. You know, try to visit mabini-- places like marcelo, tambo and baybayon-where caves and seas were enchanting to one's eye. Not only that, Lumislis Island- overlooking minol and cawayanan is best picnic place. You can see there sea turtle laying their eggs under the white sand! O what your waiting for?? visit na sa Mabini!!!!!

Anybody going to Anda should pass by Bunhayag Peak, in Canhaway, Guindulman. On the highest point, one can have a grand vista of the panoramic view of Guindulman Bay, the Anda Peninsula, the Cogtong Bay, the silhouette of the Camiguin Island, the Valley that runs from Guindulman Bay to Cogtong Bay. It's really grand! Just ask the owners of Bituon Beach Resort - they bought a piece of land there where a hotel will be constructed(according to the residents of Bunhayag). Just inquire at the Guindulman Municipal Hall. It's a 5-10 minute ride from the public market to Bunhayag. I was there in 2003 and decided to buy a piece of land where I can build a vacation dream house.

Hello! I, along with 2 other friends, will go to Bohol this weekend (Oct 16-19). I read so much about Panglao and of course the usual Choco Hills, etc. But what we really like to do is to explore the least known places. I read somewhere that Camiguin Island is just 45mins away from Anda. Can someone from Anda/Bohol verify this PLEASE?! Next question is, if that's true then how can we get there? Wots the best way from Anda to Camiguin? Thank you very much! - Charmaine

I enjoyed reading your narrative about Bituon Beach Resort in Anda. We certainly don't lack of gems of tourist destinations in Bohol although some of them are still underpromoted. When you flew over the Anda peninsula, it was possible you could have noticed a strip of sand bar nearby. This is Kawasihan, which is part of nearby Candijay, more specifically, Barangay Cogtong. I had the opportunity to visit the place, by way of a group picnic, when I was still a child and it was one of my most unforgettable experiences. I suggest you contact the Mayor of Candijay if you're interested to explore this place. More power to you! Bohol needs people like you who are a big help in promoting its tourist potential.

Thank you for featuring Anda in your website.

Long time ago when I was in high school and even when I was in college in the mid 80's and early 90's, Bohol was inexistent to the minds of the people living in Manila or to anyone not very familiar with the history of our country. Whenever they asked me where my province is and I proudly say Bohol, they would always say "Saan Yun?" (where is that?) and it would always annoy me and hurt me a little thinking how they look down on my province when in fact it is heaven for us coming from that side of the Philippines. I would always say "malapit sa Cebu" (near Cebu) just to give them the visual location of my province and they would say "Okay." uninterested. Then suddenly in late 90's when Cesar Montano ( the actor) kept mentioning about his province ( Bohol-that is) people started to take notice. Now, Bohol is the talk of the town and it makes me laugh sometimes. Anda is like a hidden treasure. some of the people coming from other towns in Bohol do not know where Anda is, would you believe? ridiculous as it may seem but it is true. they think Anda is like far far away land in the east.. and IT is.. I love going home every summer and sitting on the right side of the bus in the early morning where I can see the sun rising and the smell of the sea against my nose.. So liberating. So very much a part of my childhood, my person. There are lots of things I can say about how I feel about my home province . Even if I just stayed there for the first 14 years of my life. I would always long and look forward to summer because it is the time of the year to go back to Bohol..after all, Bohol is where the heart is. salamat doro.

Thank you very much for featuring my beloved town!!! I'm lucky to come from Anda, where weekends (and lunches) are usually spent on the beach. And mornings begin with a stroll -- beachcombing and getting the complimentary catch of the day from the fishermen... I'm not quite sure yet how to feel about the world discovering my quaint little town, (summers usually bring busloads of visitors from as far as townsfolk of the Chocolate hills), but hopefully, it will redound to the benefit of the villagers. Thanks again and keep up the good work.

Another must-see is the historical and archaeological sites declared by the National Museum. The cliff burial grounds and the carved wooden coffins, the flattened skulls and the centuries old mandibles piled in the caves overlooking the seething seas of a steep cliff tells of a history earlier than that of the Tagbilaran. and have I told you of the hematites....?

Wonderful! Beautiful pictures, nothing can compare. But we need to explore more into the hinterlands and you will see unspoilt beauty, and you will discover that a British and a German are already there before you, building their houses on the hillsides where they plan to retire in the future, and maybe, just maybe, open their place or the whole area for tourists of their nationality someday.

Hello, Anda is an idyllic little piece of paradise. I spent my childhood summers there and nothing much has changed since my last visit in '97 - folks are warm and gentle, beaches so pristine you could turn rocks under and find a cluster of seashells. Thank you for writing about my mother's birthplace.
